Things to Know Before Moving

Things to Know Before Moving

You've found your new place (congrats!), and now it's time to book your move.

Maybe you've never used professional movers, or maybe you have, but it's been a few years. Either way, we want to share expert information that our movers want you to know before your big day.

You can always expect us to show up on your move day ready to hustle, but if we all start your move on the same page, we'll arrive as strangers and leave as friends.

Appliances and Specialty Furniture (electric or smarts beds, etc)

  • Appliances

Most movers are not permitted to un-hook or re-hook your appliances from their utility connections (electrical, gas, etc.), so these items should be prepared for moving prior to our arrival. We can certainly help to move the items so that you can hook/unhook them as needed. Many times doors will need to be removed from refrigerators, and water lines/electrical lines will need to be disconnected. As appliances advance and become more complicated, we strongly encourage you to be prepared with instructions/knowledge of how to take them apart and put them back together, if needed.

  • Smart Furniture

Beds with motors, etc. As noted above regarding appliances, this is relevant for beds as well. We will do our best with appliances and smart beds, but please keep in mind, that we cannot possibly know how each and every bed (sleep number or similar) comes apart or goes back together. This will take time, and it is difficult to estimate the length of time it could take to move these items.

Specialty Items

  • Gym Equipment

Treadmills, Ellipticals, stationary bikes, Weight systems, etc. These should all be as disassembled as much as possible for moving ahead of time.   Please let us know if it is commercial or residential-grade equipment.

  • Wood Working Equipment

Please let us know if you have any woodworking equipment, so we can evaluate the best way to handle these items safely. They do need to be clean and free from sawdust/oil.

  • Gas, Oil, Propane, and other Gas-powered items

We do not move propane tanks, gasoline, or any flammable items. Make sure you empty the gas and oil from these items. Not only are they flammable and highly dangerous, but they can leak onto your furniture or other items in the moving truck.

  • Gun Safes

We will move these, however, they are a specialty item and are moved by our specialty item moving crew and are priced separately (limit 5-600 lbs).

  • Pianos

Pianos are a specialty item moved by our specialty item moving crew and are priced separately/flat rated. We will ask you what type of piano you have to move (upright, grand/baby grand) and if there are any steps or stairs.

Additional Info

  • Property Accessibility

We will typically ask you about accessibility with your pick-up and drop-off addresses. We ask this to make sure there will be no issues with navigating a truck in a tight area, overhanging trees, or steep driveway grades.   During the winter months, it is important to make sure that parking areas and walkways (sidewalks, entrance/exit steps, etc.) are cleared of any snow and salted.

We want your move to go as efficiently and safely as possible, and these are ways that help us to avoid any issues prior to the move.

  • Know the Weather

If it's going to be raining or snowing, make sure you plan for it. Please ask us about products we recommend that can help to protect your floors/carpets. We have Carpet Guard and Contractor's paper for purchase, although it will be part of the chargeable job time. If possible, we recommend that you try to have the floors/carpets prepped prior to our arrival, which will help with overall cost.

If it's been snowing, ensure the movers have a clear path and put down a layer of sand or salt to prevent slipping.

Depending on how bad the weather is, and if possible, we may take an assembly line approach to keep movers from tracking in mud. This is typically helpful with larger jobs using 4 or more movers.

In any case, if there's going to be some weather on moving day, make sure you have handy enough towels and blankets to protect your flooring, and be aware that it can add to the overall cost of the move.

Preparation… couldn't be more important and cost-effective!

Since we charge by the hour, being prepared and ready to go is essential! Boxes packed with tops, pathways/walkways are clear of clutter, furniture cleaned off and ready to be moved (disassembled if necessary).

Although we do not have packing materials (other than the quilted moving blankets and moving straps), you may have your items prepped prior to our arrival by blanketing and shrink wrapping if you prefer), etc.
